Faetopia Festival 2010

Remixing the Past and Present for Future Utopias

In June 2010, Comfort & Joy transformed an empty Castro District storefront into visions of the potential future utopias we could create together (versus the various dystopias that surround us today). The week-long “Faetopia Festival” experiment explored how vacant commercial space can be used to grow community while paying artists and raising money for wildlife rehabilitation efforts. The project included an EcoHomo ecology center, performance art, yoga classes, live theater, Cuddle Cinema film screenings and future-oriented workshops throughout the week.
Highlights include:

  • A theatrical revival of Science Fiction cult classic “ALIENS CUT MY HAIR”, a film shot locally in San Francisco, REMIXED with fresh live performances.
  • Nightly Cuddle Cinema featuring eclectic and eccentric queer films.
  • Workshops all week ranging from “Rethinking Urban Gardening” to “Cunts for Fags”, plus daily yoga and “heart circles”.
  • Deepwater oil spill exhibit with info, art and “Energy Addict” photo series.
  • A workshop with Radical Faerie co-founder Don Kilhefner “Gay Adults! Gay Adults! Where are You?

2pm – 4pm: Gay Adults! Gay Adults! Where are you?

Dr. Don Kilhefner, Radical Faerie and Jungian Psychologist

Dr. Don Kilhefner, co-founder Radical Faeries and Jungian Psychologist

Ask yourself: Where do I stand on the continuum that ranges from Elder, Adult, and Youth and how am I contributing to the health of the Gay community?” Co-facilitated with Roberto Blain, learn how to build a stronger Gay Community from Don Kilhefner Gay liberation pioneer, community organizer, Radical Faerie and Jungian psychologist He is a founder of Los Angeles’ Gay and Lesbian Center, Van Ness Recovery House, Gay Men’s Medicine Circle, and numerous other seminal organizations in the gay community including (with Harry Hay) the Radical Faeries, an international gay spirituality and consciousness movement.

In the 1970’s a movement made up largely of gay adults birthed a social revolution of major proportions which is still echoing around the world and in our hearts. Similar possibilities for moving gay community and consciousness forward are now within our grasp. The only way we will get the kind of gay community we want to live in is to create it.

Alternating between presentation, discussion, imagination, poetry and ritual, this highly-interactive workshop is directed toward initiating a soul-directed, rather than an ego-led, process that empowers both the individual and the community. It recognizes that we stand at the threshold of a historically important generational shift in the gay community. It suggests that the central organizing principle of that tectonic shift will be intergenerational dialogue and cooperation involving youth, adults, elders, and ancestors. It blesses a gay community in renewal.
