Suggested student supplies: Pen and paper or device to take notes

Eric Anderson, aka Nuggets, will moderate this panel discussion workshop focusing on how the Queer community is responding to the need for more farms, farmers, urban “fagriculture”, local and healthy food, and how we can play direct and indirect role in making that happen. We all eat and we are all concerned about the cost to our health and health of the planet to the effects of industrial farms and food. We are responding by reclaiming our role in growing more of our own food, preparing and sharing with with the community. The workshop will feature several panelists sharing their own stories of how they became food and farming activists. Panelists are rural farmers, city farmers, filmmakers, urban food advocates, gardeners, ecological designers.

This is a growing (literally growing) movement. More and more committed members of the queer community are responding, making career choices, volunteering, and getting dirt under fingernails. Participants will be inspired, and will see that there is a growing community to participant in and that they aren’t alone.

About the Panelists:

Markos Major is a Farm Educator in San Francisco. He serves as Education Coordinator and co-chair of the Friends of Alemany Farm (see http://www.alemanyfarm.org), as well as Children’s Garden Intern at the SF Botanical Garden. He helped to create the Rainbow Chard Alliance, a National Queer Farmer/LGBT Gardener networking organization.

Jonah Mossberg is the director of the Queer Farmer Film Project, an in-process documentary film about the hearts and hard work of America’s queer farmers. The project has taken him to visit queer farms and farmers all over the country and is slated to be completed in Winter 2011. Jonah is a transgender guerrilla gardener who has worked on several small organic farms and is passionate about creating sustainable local food systems. He currently works as a garden teacher at the Edible Schoolyard, a one-acre educational garden at MLK Middle School in Berkeley. queerfarmerfilmproject@gmail.com
www.queerfarmer.blogspot.com

Jim Montgomery (aka DoubleSnake) and his housemates in 1995 created Green Faerie Farm in the Berkeley flats (Bancroft at San Pablo). Jim, with his housemates and apprentices, raises goats, chickens, bees and rabbits. This livestock produces eggs, meat, milk, honey and cheese for the household and their close community. The animals also help consume the excess plant matter from extensive vegetable and fruit gardens while providing needed fertilizer. Jim is featured in unreleased documentary film Edible City: http://ediblecitymovie.com/donate#jim

Zac Benfield created a queer farm project, Feral Fruits, in the Olympia Washington area. He now is president of Nomenus, the West Coast Radical Faerie church and splits his time between San Francisco and the Wolf Creek Radical Faerie Sanctuary in S. Oregon. He is resurrecting the Magdalene Farm fields (from a previous Maoist Sissy commune) at the Sanctuary and helping oversee the transformation of the land into a sustainable commune. There will be a week-long permaculture gathering at the sanctuary on April 3-11, EcoHomo: A Queer Co-Creative Permaculture Journey. See http://www.nomenus.org/permaculture.html for details.

Jayson Munn lives in Vermont and is visiting, to learn more about local farming and food scene on the West Coast. He has years of experience growing food and flowers organically on East Coast. He currently works for Harlow Farm the largest organic farm in Vermont, and works for Burlington, and Bellows Falls farmers markets. His passion besides growing, is cooking local organic food and sharing the tasting experience with as many people as possible. Jayson@jaysonMunn.

Eric Anderson (aka Nuggets), moderator, has been a student of permaculture design for over 20 years. He is one of the original founders of SustainableQueerSF (a yahoo group) and is advocate for local economics, local food and local food production as strategic response to energy descent. He has also been active in Transition Town movement which uses permaculture principles and community organizing to address economic decline, peak oil, and climate change.

Body Image Forum w/ Andy Bydalek. 2:00pm – 3:00pm

Suggested student supplies: Courage and an open mind.

With respect to the serious issues raised in “Skinnyfat” (the upcoming edgy, highly satiric comedy about a young man’s quest to achieve six-pack abs), this discussion will be eye opening and healing for people of various body types to share their experiences from childhood to present. Andy facilitated a similar discussion at Burning Man and generated some really interesting viewpoints and conversation, not the least of which is the amount of separation/isolation our body judgments can impose.

This discussion is safe space for men to share how we perceive our own body types and the impact those perceptions have on our lives. Some example questions:

* How did our physiques play into our self-image while growing up? Now?
* How did others respond to us/view us (to the extent that we can know)?
* What sorts of ideas and judgments did we have about the boys/men around us?
* How much energy/time do we spend focusing on our external presentation?
* What do we see as personal and/or cultural ideals? Do we assign “market value” to ourselves?
* In what ways do our self-perceptions affect our interactions with other men and the world at large? Dating? Sex?

Body image is a personal and deep-rooted topic not often addressed in our looks-based culture. It’s important and valuable to hear people’s varying experiences and examine the ideas we carry with us daily.

This will be a gentle, respectful round-table discussion, where people can speak up if they want to share or just listen if they prefer. A time to hear from folks of ALL body types: heavier set, thin, “average,” muscular and everything in between and beyond.

Dance Of Shiva w/ Honey McMoney. 3:00pm – 3:30pm

Suggested student supplies: Comfortable dress/undress

Trying to pat your head and rub your belly at the same time? You know that feeling. You like it. You’re building new neural pathways and making your left and right brain communicate in new ways.

Andrey Lappa’s Shiva Nata or Dance of Shiva teaches the brain, through movement, about patterns and how to take them apart and put them back together in new ways.

While not a traditional dance, as it is neither performed for an audience nor to music, Shiva Nata is a flowing meditation as the body turns in space while arms and hands trace horizontal and vertical spirals.

It’s hard. You will be bad at it.
And that’s what makes it so easy! You are supposed to be bad at it!
It is a movement puzzle that you are supposed to be bad at. You will have moments of amazing flailing.
You are creating new neural pathways. It feels like that.
And it’s kinda fun.

Honey McMoney is an artist, and an advocate of dance and movement of all kinds. He’s been practicing Dance of Shiva for about 4 years. He intends his Dance of Shiva workshop to be energizing, enlightening and fun. Everyone is welcome, no experience necessary. All are encouraged to enjoy.
